MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of YMCA Youth & Government is to teach democratic values and skills to youth through hands-on experiences.
VALUES AND PRINCIPLES
- Foster the development of citizens responsibility
- Develop social competence, problem-solving ability, and communication skills
- Inspire young people to be responsible and act with integrity
- Encourage self reliance and a sense of purpose in youth

Strategic Goals
Adopted September 15th, 2007
Goal 1: Increase participation in Youth & Government programs with emphasis on geographic, economic, and ethnic diversity.
Objectives:
a. Achieve a net gain of 3 Mock Trial teams and 3 Youth Legislature delegations by 2010, from areas of the state not currently served.
b. Determine whether current districts in both YL and MT support future growth.
Goal 2: Enhance the consistency and quality of local Mock Trial and Youth Legislature programs.
a. At least four rounds of participation for each Mock Trial team at the district level by 2010.
b. Conduct a regional needs assessment to determine the areas of program development and the plan for program expansion through focus groups, surveys and other methods by 07-08.
c. Assess long-term sustainability issues associated with Mock Trial and Youth Legislature.
d. Assess marketing and communication strategies that help promote growth.
GOAL 3: INCREASE AND DIVERSIFY YOUTH & GOVERNMENT FINANCIAL RESOURCES
Objectives
a. Develop an implementation plan for spending the 2007-09 $50,000 state fund appropriation that will fulfill legislative intent by demonstrating positive programmatic outcomes and fiscal accountability, and increase executive and legislative support for Youth & Government programs.
b. Identify and recruit additional non-board members to join the annual fundraising campaign.
c. Develop and approve an annual fundraising schedule that reflects program needs, board/committee responsibility, and target donors.
d. Develop a comprehensive plan to identify and cultivate major donors to the annual campaign.
a. Develop a comprehensive plan to establish an endowment program. Strategy: Finance committee to make initial report to the board at the 2008 annual retreat; plan to be completed by 2010.
GOAL 4: ENSURE THE STAFF AND VOLUNTEER RESOURCES NECESSARY TO ACCOMPLISH GOALS 1, 2, AND 3.
Objectives
a. Review and, if necessary, adjust current staffing configuration. Strategy: Executive Director will provide recommendations to the Board 3/2008.
b. Fill all existing board vacancies as soon as possible, while maintaining a current list of potential board candidates. Strategy: review and update candidate list at every board meeting.
